Spelling Poem #8: 5 Little Jack-O-Lanterns

It is almost time for Halloween!  Most boys and girls are excited about this celebration because it involves a lot of dressing up and candy.  This week I have a song called ''5 Little Jack-O-Lanterns''.  We are learning about numbers in Math and I picked this particular song because it has ordinal numbers, such as first, second, third.  We should not only know our numbers, but also our ordinal numbers as well because it is important for sequencing (as well as the date....we say ''thirty-first, not thirty-one'').  This week, the Spelling Words are in the 'it' and 'at' word families!  Please try the ''Additional Questions'' below and this week, if you hand it in to me, you get a BONUS prize!  :)

Getting ready for Halloween!

Halloween is coming next Monday and we made some Frankensteins and jack-o-lanterns to make our classroom more festive!  We will be having a Halloween party on Monday.  If you want to wear a costume, make sure to wear it before coming to school.  However, if you have a mask, you can wear it when you get to school to be safe.  If you want to bring treats to share with the class, make sure that there are NO nuts and peanuts, as we have people with allergies.  Thank you!  Can't wait to see all your costumes!!!

Our Class Jack-o-Lantern!

Today we turned our pumpkin from Willowgrove Farm into a jack-o-lantern!  We read a story about pumpkins and then we decided on the face of our pumpkin.  We then carved it and felt the slimy insides!  It was very interesting how pumpkins can float in the water because they are very heavy.  This is because they are hollow inside.  We found lots of seeds inside our pumpkin, but they didn't go to waste because we toasted them and ate them!  Congratulations to Twinkle who got to take home our class jack-o-lantern!

First, we need to gather all our materials.

Next, we draw on our face.

This is how the inside of our pumpkin looked like.

Carving the face!

Our finished product! How spoooooky!

Everything we need to toast our pumpkin seeds.

Our toasted pumpkin seeds!  YUMMY!

Retelling Stories

Often times when we finish reading a book, we go ''DONE!" and go to another book.  However, as good readers, we need to understand the story as well.  We need to make sure that we are able to retell the stories that we read.  Today we talked about how to retell a story.  When retelling stories, we need to talk about the characters, the setting, the problem, solution, as well as the BME (beginning, middle, end).  We heard the story, ''The 3 Little Pigs'', a story many of us know.  Then, in groups, we practiced retelling.  Here are our work below.

Patterning!

We are wrapping up our patterning and sorting unit in Math.  There are patterns everywhere!  Look for patterns in your house and next time you are out...and see if you can name them and find the pattern core!  You can also sort everything and anything!  You can sort the plates in your house into different groups, or even your toys and Lego.  Have fun with patterns and sorting at home!

Here are some Thanksgiving patterns that we came up with.
