Terry Fox

Today we had our Terry Fox walk at school.  As a school, we raised over $3,400 for the Terry Fox Foundation!  Great job everyone!  Thank you for those of us who bought t-shirts and donated loonies for the foundation.  This week, we learned all about Terry Fox and his significance to Canada.  We learned how Terry was determined to raise money for cancer research and is a true hero.  He cared deeply for other people and wanted to help.  We talked about every day heroes...people like police officers, firefighters, and doctors all help people every day.  But we also have people in our lives who are heroes too!  Here are some of our heroes:

Character Trait: RESPECT

For the month of September, the character trait was RESPECT.  Boys and girls know that in order to be respectful, we need to be nice to others and to our environment (our classroom).  We should help people when they are need and treat others the way you want to be treated.  Lots of students in the class demonstrated respect, so it was hard to pick just 2 students.  Congratulations to Twinkle and Justin, who are always respectful in the classroom.  =)  Next month's character trait will be responsibility.

Thank you for coming!

Just a BIG THANK YOU to all the parents who were able to come out last night!  It was a pleasure meeting and talking to all of you about our year.  I hope that you were able to log onto RAZ-kids last night and read some books.  The 'Snuggle and Read' folders will come home next Monday.

For those that were unable to make it, your RAZ-kids passwords will be given out today at school and the Agenda on what we talked about last night will also be sent home. If you have any questions, feel free to come talk to me or write a note in your child's agenda.  Thank you for your support!

Back at Terry Fox!

I am very happy to announce that I will be now staying at Terry Fox for this school year!  The Toronto District School Board had declared me surplus on Monday, September 19, meaning I had to go to a new school.  Throughout the week, I was packing and moving my personal belongings out of the classroom (as the children may have told you).  Then, on Friday, September 26 at 12:45pm, they gave us an additional teacher allocation, which means that I can now return to Terry Fox!  Although my things have been packed up, the other teachers at Terry Fox helped me greatly by unpacking my boxes for me.  It was a very busy week with lots of emotions running through my head....but now that it is over, I'm so glad that I get to stay as your child's teacher!  Let's have a wonderful school year together! :D

Kissing Hands

We also read a story called 'The Kissing Hand' by Audrey Penn, which is about a little raccoon who is scared to go to school.  His mom gave him a 'kissing hand' to remind him that she loves him and that he will be fine by himself at school.  Sometimes at school, we may miss our families.  This is why we decided to make our own 'kissing hands'.  We made our handprints and had someone we love at home make a heart for us.  Our 'kissing hands' are all on our door and will remind us of our family when we are at school.  Here are some of our 'kissing hands'.

Our Class Quilt

We read the story "It's OK to be Different" by Todd Parr and discussed how we should accept everyone the way they are.  Even though we are a class, we are all unique in our own way.  To show that, we decided to make a class quilt. We designed our own section with our favourite things and pieced the quilt together.  Here is our finished product!

Our Class Promise

Today we read a story about a boy called David.  He did not know how to behave at school and was really naughty.  We talked about having rules at school and made a list for our classroom.  We all signed it, promising to follow these rules.  Please discuss the importance of rules and why we should follow them.

Weclome to our Classroom Blog!

Welcome to Grades 1!

I am very excited to have this blog so that we can share our learning, special events, and information with you.  I will update the blog throughout the year to reflect what we are doing in class, and suggest ways for additional learning.  This additional learning can be in the form of useful websites, or learning strategies for language and math.  Private and confidential information will not be posted on this blog, as well as any pictures of the students. Please feel free to call me at the school or write in your child's agenda if you have any questions or concerns.  I look forward to learning with all of you!

Let's have a wonderful school year.
